The Making of Lost in the Woods

Lost in the WoodsThis assembly shows the creative process behind the book Lost in the Woods, by Carl R.Sams II and Jean Stoick, as well as a few highlights of how we turned the book into a movie.

How does an idea turn into a final product? You'll hear the best secrets and stories about creating the springtime tale, such as finding the animals in the woods, changing/rewriting the story and choosing pictures for the book.

The Making of Lost in the Woods And we make it interactive! We use video clips, live music, animal voices and even a game show to bring the creative process to life. (You'll probably also hear Robert talk like a chipmunk or a mother goose along the way.)

Does this assembly relate to our curriculum?

Our program helps elementary students:

  • Recognize that authors make choices as they convey meaning and influence an audience. Examples include word selection, use of illustrations, etc.
  • Begin to develop and use strategies for planning, drafting, revising and editing a variety of text forms.
  • Identify and use aspects of the craft of the speaker, writer and illustrator to formulate and express ideas artistically. Examples include design, perspective and dialogue.
  • Experience how science concepts can be interpreted through creative expression, such as language arts and fine arts.

"I first became acquainted with Sisbro’s work when I covered their presentations at a local elementary school for the Post-Tribune newspaper.  Their interactive presentation delighted everyone from the youngest kindergarteners to the oldest person in the room (probably me). As a former English teacher, I especially appreciated their emphasis with the older students on the writing process, especially revision."  -- Linda Lemond, Columnist and Grandparent, Indiana
